How should we choose the material when customer ask for hardness?
As we all know, D2 has high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It’s widely used in high-precision molds and tools manufacturing, which can also shorten molds manufacturing cycle. With high strength and excellent mechanical properties, 42CrMo4V is widely used in the fields of machinery manufacturing, automobile industry, energy equipment and etc. It is suitable for parts subject to high loads and dynamic loads.
Customer required the customized part hardness is HRC56+2.
The best hardness range for 42CrMo4V quenching is HRC42-45, which has better mechanical properties. Material quenching after tempering at 100 ℃, the hardness can reach HRC56, but it is very easy to cause parts break.
Although the material cost of D2 is higher than 42CrMo4V, service life of D2 part is shorter than 42CrMo4V part's as well, we ultimately chose to use D2 in our manufacturing. A choice that largely avoids parts being too brittle, which resulting in only a single use, and ensures that the parts are hard and durable.
